As an attendee of last years event I was overwhelmed by the number of people who came to the event. According to the Expo website, over 1,200 people attended. It was a good feeling to walk around and take samples from the dozens of booths without having to ask if the food was gluten free, and not having to explain to anyone what it meant to be “gluten free”.  I know that there are lots of people who are on gluten free diets, but to see that many people in one place really gave me a strong feeling of solidarity; that I’m really not in this thing alone!

For me the highlight of the expo was getting to hear Dr. Alessio Fasano from the Maryland Center for Celiac Research speak about celiac disease and gluten intolerance. Dr. Fasano provided a wealth of information. I was madly scribbling notes the entire time he spoke, trying to keep up with all of the information he provided. The good news is that Dr. Fasano will be back to give a talk at the 2012.

The event will also feature presentations from Dr. Peter Osborne, Chef Reinhart, Mrs. United States -Shannon Ford, Naomi Poe of Better Batter & much more.
If you live in North Carolina I highly advise marking off June 2nd on your calendar to make sure you don’t miss this years expo.
